James began diving in 1995 in the UK's North Sea. Travel and work offered opportunities to explore the Red Sea, New Zealand and the Canary Islands. In 2005 he began working in the dive industry full time, instructing in Cornwall, UK. Surrounded by stunning reefs and historic shipwrecks, diving had become a daily activity and the opportunities to learn from experienced peers were plenty.
In 2007 he returned to New Zealand to settle, working as an instructor trainer and as a ranger with DOC. James began diving with Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) in 2008, subsequently taking cave and technical training in Europe and Australasia. He has since been involved in cave exploration projects in the South Island and exploring deep ocean reefs around Aotearoa. Now based in Whakatāne, James is focused on building an active diving community to explore and document the Eastern Bay's coastal waters.
